How to Become a Conductor

This first section The Careers Office aims to give you an overview of not only the variety of competencies and expectations required to be a conductor but also offer up some pointers on how you can train more effectively. Due to the diverse and multi-faceted nature of the skills required it may seem like a lot to learn (and you’d be right!) but this section seeks to demystify some of this and whilst it would be unrealistic to create a completely exhaustive list of all relevant skills and knowledge, the following chapters examine some of the possible career paths in conducting. This has been done so that you may draw upon this knowledge collectively in order to better help you reach your own conclusions. The next section discusses career paths in a bit more detail but first, let us look at what we consider the five principal areas of a conductor’s development and what the educational roadmap to a conducting career may look like.
